7 Tips For Driving Someone with Dementia

Talking about when to stop driving can be one of the hardest conversations you may have with your loved one. Dementia can make the conversation more difficult because the person may not realize that they are having difficulties driving. Once a person with dementia stops driving there may be challenges having them get into or ride in the car. Below are tips that can help reduce the anxiety and frustration a person may feel when it is no longer safe for them to drive.

  1. Have the doctor conduct a driving safety assessment.
  2. Keep the keys out of sight.
  3. Remove the car from the property and say it is in the shop for repairs.
  4. If they ask, tell them the doctor (or insurance company) said they can’t drive anymore.
  5. Open the car door for them.
  6. Use the child safety lock on the car door so they can’t get out when you walk around to get in.
  7. Have someone meet & greet them at the destination to encourage them tog et out of the car.
